My mother, Angela, was born on July 24, 1935, in Shimla, India. Shimla, which lies in the Himalayan foothills, was the summer capital of the British Raj. When the Americans built their own summer retreat in the Philippines, in Baguio, Shimla was their inspiration. Angela’s father, Geoffrey, was born in Lucknow, India and her mother, Doris, was born in what was then Bombay but is now Mumbai.
