This past weekend in Texas, while I was discussing light cues for a concert of Patti’s with the local master electrician, I tried to reference something we’d done the week before and, for my life, I couldn’t remember where that last performance had been.
Pandemic? The Russians starting their war against Ukraine? Those things seem almost a lifetime ago, as if they've been woven into our existence and we are now inured to their existence. The war in Gaza is heading in that direction, though I don't know how a person can claim any degree of humanity and become numb to 32,000 deaths, most of them civilians. I constantly marvel at humanity's ability to adjust, adapt, and to accept the tragic and senseless as the norm.
As for your lighting experiences, I work as a stage door attendant for five theaters in downtown Portland, OR. It amazes me that performers can go from place to place on tours and work in places like that. I suppose after a while one bleeds into the next, and backstage areas uniformly look about as good as they smell, but they're certainly not designed for comfort.
